Download and install VLC player
Before starting, you must have VLC player installed on your computer. This is a free and open source media player with built-in video compression capabilities. If you don't have it installed yet, follow these steps:
- Visit the official VLC page: https://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.es.html
- Select the download option corresponding to your operating system (Windows, macOS or Linux).
- Run the downloaded file and install the program following the on-screen instructions.
Open a video in VLC
To begin compressing the video, we must first open the file in VLC. You can do it by following these steps:
- Launch VLC player on your computer.
- In the menu bar, select Medium > Open File.
- Navigate to the video you want to compress and click "Open."
Access the conversion function in VLC
Once the video is open in VLC, continue with the conversion function by following these steps:
- Press on Medium in the menu bar, then select Convert / Save.
- A pop-up window called “Open Media” will appear. Here, check that the “File” tab is selected and click the “Add” button.
- Navigate to the video you want to compress, select it and click "Open."
- Finally, click on the button Convert / Save, at the bottom of the window.
Set up video compression in VLC
Now that we have access to the conversion feature in VLC, it's time to set up video compression. Follow the steps below to set up lossless compression:
- In the “Convert” window, select the radio button called Convert and click the gear icon next to the “Profile” drop-down box.
- This will open the “Transcoding Profile” window. Click on the tab Video codec.
- Activate the check boxes corresponding to Maintain original aspect ratio y Keep the original video track.
- Make sure the “Scaling” checkbox is cleared and the “Frames per second” value is the same as your original video.
- Click the “Save” button to save the transcoding profile settings.
Set the path and name of the output file
Once we have configured video compression in VLC, we need to set the path and name of the output file. To do this, follow these steps:
- In the “Convert” window, look for the section Destination at the bottom of the window.
- Click the “Browse” button to open a file selection pop-up window.
- Navigate to the desired location, enter a file name for the compressed video, and click “Save.”
- Finally, click “Start” to begin video compression.
Once the process is complete, you will be able to find the compressed video in the location you set previously.
